3rd Conviction in Fiery Subway Death

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A third teenager was convicted of murder in the death of a subway token clerk who was set afire in his booth during a robbery attempt in Brooklyn a year ago. The attack on 50-year-old Harry Kaufman gained national attention because it mirrored one depicted in the movie “Money Train” in which a pyromaniac torched two subway token booths. Jurors found Thomas Malik, 19, guilty of lighting the gasoline inside the booth during the Nov. 26, 1995, incident. Two other Brooklyn teenagers were previously convicted of second-degree murder. Vincent Ellerbe, 18, who was found guilty the day before, and Malik face 25 years to life. James Irons, 19, was convicted last month for his role as the lookout. He was sentenced to 25 years to life.
