SANTA CRUZ ISLAND — A Ventura fishing boat and a merchant ship collided Thursday evening near Santa Cruz Island.
None of the four crew members aboard the 58-foot Fearless Jane were injured during the 6:30 p.m. collision with an unidentified freight ship three miles north of the island’s Cavern Point.
However, the smaller vessel, which is used to catch squid, sustained heavy damage and was being towed back to the mainland by the Coast Guard, said Petty Officer Jamie Devitt.
Devitt said the Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the collision.
The vessels “were both in shipping lanes, but we haven’t determined who was at fault,” she said.
