Opposition Leader Breaks Confinement

Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader ended a government-imposed home confinement and declared her support for students staging the largest protest since a bloody 1988 uprising against military rule. Authorities had told Aung San Suu Kyi to stay inside her Yangon compound for her own safety since early Tuesday, just after riot police dispersed hundreds of demonstrators. Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, characterized the order as “illegal confinement.” She slipped out to attend a friend’s wedding and to celebrate a national holiday.
