Esperanza Wins Soccer Tournament

David Hyman scored from six yards with about 10 minutes left to play, giving Esperanza a 3-2 victory over Santa Barbara San Marcos Tuesday in the championship game of the Marina boys’ soccer tournament.
Hyman’s goal came on an assist by David Munoz, who had two in the game. The play started with a corner kick that was long but Munoz raced to the ball before it went out of bounds and kicked it in front of the net to Hyman.
Josh Diets and Mike Murphy had first-half goals for Esperanza (13-1-1).
Aaron Colacion, a forward for Esperanza who had four goals and five assists in the tournament, was selected most valuable player.
In the third-place game:
Ocean View 2, Fountain Valley 1--Kurt Nofziger broke a 1-1 tie with a goal near the end of the first half for Ocean View (4-7-1). Chad Monroe had 14 saves for Ocean View.
In the fifth-place game:
Cypress 1, Los Angeles Loyola 0--Nelson Coronado scored in the second half and Matt Resor had nine saves for Cypress (11-2-1).
In the consolation round:
Corona del Mar 1, Servite 0--Ken Brown had 12 saves for Corona del Mar. He had five shutouts in the tournament, but Corona del Mar lost in the first round on penalty kicks.
In quarterfinals of the Savanna girls’ basketball tournament:
Santa Margarita 53, Savanna 31--Santa Margarita outscored Savanna, 15-2, in the second quarter to take a 33-12 halftime lead. Danielle Bennett scored 15 points to lead Santa Margarita (10-2), which will play a team from Canada, Archbishop O’Leary, in Thursday’s semifinals at 6 p.m.
Calvary Chapel 34, Cypress 33--Christy Ring (seven points) banked a three-point shot from 30 feet with two seconds left to send Calvary Chapel (10-4) to the semifinals against Bellflower at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Cypress is 8-4.
In a nonleague game:
Aliso Niguel 51, Irvine 34--Kristin Moorehouse, a junior forward, had 13 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs, for host Aliso Niguel (6-3).
In consolation games from the Century Holiday boys’ basketball tournament:
Brethren Christian 54, Santiago 39--Dan Muilenburg scored nine of his 21 points in the second quarter, when Brethren Christian (5-8) outscored Santiago, 16-3, to blow the game open. Santiago is 4-6.
Laguna Beach 67, Villa Park JV 50--Chris Sirianni led Laguna Beach with 19 points.
Los Amigos 64, Century JV 41--Michael Wahl scored 22 points for Los Amigos.
In the Nike Classic at Del Mar Torrey Pines High:
Rancho Bernardo 57, Dana Hills 50--Rancho Bernardo scored 23 points off of 17 Dana Hills turnovers in a consolation-round game. Tadeu Souza had 24 points and seven rebounds for Dana Hills (9-6), which finished 1-4 in the tournament.
