FRIDAY: These Buds for You

The Buds, who have nothing to do with beer or the Drug Enforcement Administration, are back at the Hungry Hunter in Thousand Oaks for an evening of rockin’ blues. The show begins around 9 in the basement bar and will set you back the ever-affordable nothing.

The Buds feature Chet McCracken (Doobie Brothers) on drums and vocals, Chris Pinnick (Chicago) on guitar and Buddy Sklar (Spencer Davis Group) on bass and vocals. The band’s debut CD, a live effort titled “Thorn of a Rose,” came out last year. The Hungry Hunter is at 487 N. Moorpark Road. Call 497-3925.

Invited to Uninvited

The Uninvited, in addition to being the name of a 1944 ghost-story movie starring Ray Milland, is also a darn fine pop rock quartet that recently released its third album, “Artificial Hip,” perhaps the best album of 1996. This tight quartet will regale the masses at Nicholby’s in Ventura.

The Uninvited is powered by the guitar-playing Taylor brothers, J.T. and Steve, who also harmonize with the best of them. Also there are lots of funny songs about the ubiquitous rotten relationship and other stuff. From “Peter Christ,” a sample line: “I’m a moron just to be here / You attack and I surrender / You’re yelling something--I read the paper / No one can hear you except the neighbors.”

Opening around 9:30 p.m., all the way from the Lone Star State, is Mangy Ed. The Uninvited will start about 90 minutes later. Six bucks will get you into Nicholby’s, at 404 E. Main St. in Ventura. Call 653-2320.

SUNDAY: Society Screenings

The Ojai Film Society will open its winter season of cinematic offerings at the Ojai Playhouse with Mike Leigh’s acclaimed “Secrets & Lies” (rated R).

Garnering the Palme d’Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, Leigh’s comedy-drama about an adopted black woman who discovers that her natural mother is white, was lauded for its accessibility and honesty. Brenda Blethyn--who won the best actress award at Cannes for her role--leads a formidable cast.

All screenings are at 4:30 p.m. Sundays and ducats are $6.50, $4 for seniors and students. The venue is at 145 E. Ojai Ave. Call 646-2973. The rest of the schedule looks like this:
