City Policy on Design Rules to Be Weighed

As Tapo Street businesses prepare to rebuild and expand, the Simi Valley City Council on Monday will weigh how to govern their design until citywide guidelines are developed later this year.

City planners are already reviewing three proposed projects: Suburban Propane, Tapo Plaza and Terry Lumber.

Suburban Propane officials have promised to wait until the new citywide design guidelines are in place before refurbishing their building.

The owners of the Tapo Plaza shopping center have asked that the city wait to process the center’s redesign plans until the guidelines are finalized.

And Terry Lumber has a partially complete development application pending for redesigning its Tapo Street store.

The council is expected to decide whether city staff can guide developers through their projects step by step on elements such as landscaping, lighting and signs until the full guidelines are set.
