Roman Turek made 38 saves for his second NHL victory and Brent Gilchrist and Mike Modano scored power-play goals to lead the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings at Detroit on Friday.
The Stars ended a three-game losing streak and improved their NHL-best road record to 13-5-1.
Turek, a rookie, was starting his second game since being recalled Tuesday from the Stars’ top farm club at Kalamazoo, Mich.
Igor Larionov’s 100th goal accounted for the Red Wings’ score.
“[Turek] knows their shooters, he really knows the Russians,” Dallas Coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We needed someone who was on top of his game tonight, that’s why we went with him.”
New Jersey 1 Ottawa 0--After giving up 12 goals in two games, the Devils tightened up defensively and goalie Martin Brodeur made 19 saves to record his fourth shutout of the season in the game at Kanata, Ontario. Bill Guerin scored at 5:13 of the third period, his team-high 15th goal.
Brodeur had been pulled in each of his previous two starts. He lasted only two periods after giving up five goals on 15 shots in Thursday’s 6-1 home loss to Pittsburgh.
“I was concentrating hard, even though I didn’t have many shots,” Brodeur said. “When I did, I could see them and that makes it easier.”
Washington 3, Phoenix 0--Olaf Kolzig stopped 22 shots in recording his first NHL shutout and Peter Bondra stretched his goal-scoring streak to six games to lead Washington at home.
Washington led, 2-0, on goals by Chris Simon and Michal Pivonka before Bondra scored his eighth goal in six games and 23rd of the season in the third period.
Kolzig, the backup to Jim Carey, was 0-3-2 during his last five starts. It was the first shutout by a Capital goalie other than Carey since Don Beaupre blanked Tampa Bay in March 1994.
St. Louis 2, Buffalo 2--Alexei Zhitnik scored the tying goal with 7:53 to play in the third period to help the Sabres overcome a two-goal deficit at Buffalo.
Dominik Hasek made 33 saves for Buffalo, which has lost only one of its last nine games. Donald Audette also scored for the Sabres.
Edmonton 4, Toronto 3--Boris Mironov’s power-play goal with 14:07 remaining broke a third-period tie and lifted the Oilers to their third consecutive victory in the game at Edmonton.
The goal came 29 seconds after Doug Gilmour had beaten Curtis Joseph with a 30-foot slap shot for a short-handed goal, his second of the game.
