City Will Give Away Its Old Computers

Flush with half a million dollars worth of new computers, the city is hosting a giveaway to worthy nonprofit groups of the older, slower models that used to process civic data.
About 60 of the 386-type, IBM-compatible computers are available, said Dave Kiff, the assistant to the city manager who is fielding applications. Most of the computers have functioning monitors and keyboards and are already loaded with Windows software.
They have little resale value, so the city has decided to offer them as teaching and training tools.
Nonprofit groups, including the school district, must show that they have a need for the equipment, that its use will benefit city residents and that the groups will use the computers to teach or train, rather than for clerical work.
“Our goal is to help people become more technologically competent,” Kiff said. “This way each computer is helping 10 or 12 people instead of one secretary who already knows the program.”
To apply, contact Wendy Smythe at City Hall, 300 E. Chapman Ave., Orange, CA 92867 or call her at (714) 744-2219.
