Fujimori Tries to Downplay Crisis

President Alberto Fujimori seized the initiative in an increasingly fierce propaganda war with rebels holding 74 hostages in Lima. He led a visit to poor neighborhoods to prove the crisis had not paralyzed the country. The trip followed his Tuesday tour of a prison holding some Tupac Amaru rebels. Meanwhile, the government is questioning a Japanese reporter and an interpreter who entered the hostage compound.
