Council Endorses El Toro Airport Plan

Saying that the county’s economy would benefit greatly from a new airport in South County, the City Council has endorsed conversion of the El Toro Marine Corps air base into a civilian airport.
The council recently passed a resolution unanimously supporting the goals of Measure A. That proposition, approved by voters in 1994, calls for planning a commercial airport at El Toro. Last year, voters defeated Measure S, which would have sidetracked the proposed civilian airport.
The City Council said a commercial airport “is by far the most beneficial reuse of El Toro, allowing the businesses and travelers access to national and international markets.”
The council’s resolution also said that the proposed new airport would cause less noise than does the existing Marine base. The plan, said the council, “reduces the noise impacts in the surrounding communities in comparison to the military mission of the last 53 years.”
