UCLA Defeats Fullerton in Women’s Gymnastics

Leah Homma won three of four events as top-ranked UCLA defeated Cal State Fullerton, 191.50-189.175, in a nonconference women’s gymnastics meet Friday at Fullerton.

Homma won the vault (9.85), uneven bars (9.80) and the balance beam (9.85). Homma did not compete on the floor exercise, which teammate Amy Smith won with a score of 9.75.

Lena Degteva won the all-around for the Bruins (1-0) with 38.50 points.

Fullerton’s Katy Maty finished second in the all-around with 38.025 points. Maty finished tied for second in the floor exercise (9.65) with teammate Sara Taylor. Maty also finished third on the balance beam (9.70) for the Titans (0-1).

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Long Beach State 102, Cal State Fullerton 94 (OT)--Toby Metoyer of Long Beach State made a four-footer with three seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 83-83, and force overtime. Metoyer scored a career-high 27 points and had 11 rebounds for the 49ers (4-8, 1-0). Sarah Davis scored 16 points for Long Beach State.

Ember Brown scored a career-high 19 points for the 49ers.

Kriss Sigg scored 27 points for the Titans (5-6, 0-1). Andrea Thieme scored 19 points and had 11 assists for Fullerton. Dee Braxton had 15 rebounds for the Titans.

UC Irvine 57, Pacific 54--UC Irvine (6-6, 1-0) went on a 11-0 run to open the second half, taking its largest lead of the game 39-34 with 10:01 second left to play. Meg Stafford, who scored 12 points in the game, scored four points in the final 29 seconds for the Anteaters. Leticia Oseguera led all scorers with 25 points and had 11 rebounds for UC Irvine. Shannon Smith scored 16 points for Pacific (1-11, 0-1).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Concordia 98, Ottawa 61--Rick Haywood scored 29 points and had seven rebounds for Concordia (7-8). Greg O’Hagan had 22 points and seven rebounds for Concordia.

Akrum Alrahib and Kalim Scott each scored 12 points for Concordia.

Ralph Banks scored 16 points for Ottawa (4-9).

In Pacific 10 Conference wrestling:

UC Davis 22, Cal State Fullerton 12--Jason Webster defeated UC Davis’ Ryan Hutfless, 4-0, at 177 pounds for Fullerton. Orlando deCastroverde also won for the Titans, defeating Josh Sternberg, 8-3, at 126 pounds.
