Court Worker Pleads No Contest in Theft

A former Municipal Court employee pleaded no contest Wednesday to charges stemming from the embezzlement of $240,000 in public funds from the Pomona courthouse.

Michael La Motte, 40, pleaded to one count of misappropriation of public funds and three counts of state tax evasion. He remains in custody on $360,000 bail and will be sentenced Feb. 28 by Superior Court Judge Edward Ferns.

La Motte over the course of two years pocketed money that cities paid to cover the cost of processing tickets at the Pomona courthouse, where he worked as a deputy court administrator, prosecutors said. His attorney, John Murphy, said La Motte is attempting to make restitution.
