STANTON — Authorities on Wednesday identified the man shot to death a day earlier by Garden Grove police and confirmed that he was unarmed when he was killed during a home invasion.
Jarred Joe Arnett, 19, of Garden Grove was killed after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car and then barging into the mobile home of a retired couple for refuge, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson.
Arnett assaulted the woman and, as three Garden Grove police officers entered the mobile home, the suspect “did something that precipitated” the fatal shooting, Wilkerson said. He would not elaborate until an investigation is concluded.
Police spotted Arnett driving a stolen car in Garden Grove about 8 p.m. and tried to pull him over, officials said. A chase reaching 120 mph wound through city streets and into Stanton, where the driver crashed into a light pole at the corner of Western and Katella avenues, police said.
The driver bolted from the wrecked car and ran to the nearby La Lampara mobile home park and forced his way into a home. Police followed and, according to witnesses, opened up with a barrage of gunfire that left a dozen bullet holes in the walls.
Arnett was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center, where he died. The female resident of the mobile home suffered a minor head injury and bruises.
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting, which occurred in its jurisdiction. The three officers present during the shooting are on paid administrative leave and will be interviewed by sheriff’s investigators, Wilkerson said.
