Re “Study Finds Immigrants’ Economic Effect Mixed,” Jan. 23:
In addition to telling us that immigrants are a net fiscal benefit to Southern California, the USC study also concludes that immigrants have a strong drive to move up the economic ladder and consequently to better neighborhoods and communities. This just tells us that immigrants are just like the rest of us in that we all seek to improve our families’ lives.
Most immigrants come to the United States seeking opportunity and jobs and not to live off welfare as some of our elected officials would want us to believe. Although some may question whether Los Angeles has become poorer because of immigrants, the study certainly argues for the contention that the region receives an overall economic boost from immigrants.
