Man Gets 210 Days in Jail for Beating Wife

A Canoga Park man convicted for the second time in less than four months of attacking his wife was sentenced to serve 210 days in jail, the city attorney said.

Samuel Arelis, 27, was sentenced Tuesday in Van Nuys Municipal Court after pleading no contest to spousal battery related to an attack last week on his 34-year-old wife, who was not identified.

Arelis also was placed on three years’ probation and ordered to undergo a year of domestic violence counseling and to stay away from the victim, said Deputy City Atty. Patrick Hiscocks, the prosecutor who handled the case.

In November, the man was sentenced to 60 days in jail for a similar offense.

His latest domestic violence charge grew out of an incident Jan. 22, when Arelis attacked and beat his pregnant wife with his fists during an argument at 3 a.m.

City Atty. James K. Hahn said Los Angeles police officers reported that the woman had several cuts and bruises on her face and body, including swelling on the inside of her left knee and a cut upper lip. Officers also found blood splattered on her shirt.

Arelis had left the Canoga Park apartment by the time officers arrived, but he was arrested there when LAPD West Valley detectives returned the next day, authorities said.
