Defining ‘Family’
Your Jan. 27 article, “Laws Mean Lesbian Custody Battles Often Are One-Sided,” is itself lavishly one-sided. Nowhere does it mention or otherwise explore the fact that the vast majority of Americans do not consider two lesbians and a child a “family,” as your reporter writes (“for five years the three were a family”).
My American Heritage dictionary defines family as “the most instinctive, fundamental social or mating group in man and animal, especially the union of man and woman through marriage and offspring.”
