Council to Discuss Two Major Projects

Two major contracts--one for expansion of the Civic Building and the other for street repairs--will come before the City Council on Tuesday.

City Manager Fred Maley said the two projects will be among the biggest spending decisions by the council this year. The Civic Building expansion calls for more office space, including a room for the county sheriff’s deputy who provides police service.

The project also might include a 361-square-foot addition to the city’s library branch.

Maley said he will recommend that the council approve the library-addition option as well as the Civic Building expansion. The total contract would be about $160,000, he said.

The city manager said he also will recommend approval of a street resurfacing contract worth about $90,000. All of the work will be on residential streets, Maley said.

The council has scheduled no action at next week’s session on the city’s coyote situation. Recent council meetings have been packed by residents speaking for and against a proposal to trap and kill coyotes that venture into neighborhoods.

“The only thing involving coyotes will be a verbal report I’m going to give,” said Maley, who was asked by the council last month to find out how nearby cities are dealing with the wild animals.

“Basically, I found that our neighboring cities aren’t doing anything right now,” Maley said. “And that’s what I will report to the council.”
