Thelma Gutierrez is a television news reporter. Gisselle Acevedo-Franco is with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Angelica Millan is a public service-minded nurse. And freshman Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove) won a historic election victory in Orange County in November.
All four will be honored Sunday as part of a fair celebrating Latina role models. The annual event is sponsored by two Spanish-language radio stations, KLVE-FM and KTNQ-AM.
“These are women who have gone beyond themselves to reach out to the community and strive to achieve their dreams,” said Oralia Michel, a spokeswoman for the fair. “The award is based on their community work and what they have given back to the community, not just on how much they have achieved in their careers.”
In addition to the Outstanding Latina of the Year award presentation, the fair will include displays and exhibits for women and families, a salsa dance contest, children’s activities and rides, a fashion show and entertainment.
Time and Place: Noon to 5:30 p.m. Awards ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. Los Angeles Convention Center, North Exhibit Hall, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles.
Fee and Information: Free. (213) 741-1151.
