Civic Building Work to Begin Next Month

An expansion of the Civic Building will begin in March and is expected to be completed in June, City Manager Fred Maley said this week.
“The contractor is anxious to begin, so work will get underway in the next 30 days,” Maley said.
The City Council has accepted the $160,347 bid of SMC Construction Co. of Costa Mesa to do the work, which will add 1,904 square feet to the Civic Building at 17855 Santiago Blvd. in the Villa Park Shopping Center.
The 25-year-old Civic Building houses all city offices and the meeting chamber for the council.
The expansion will provide an office for the sheriff’s deputy who provides police service to the city and will add space for Community Access Television and the city Building Department, and office space for the mayor and City Council.
The contract also calls for a 361-square-foot reading room at the city’s library branch, which adjoins the Civic Building.
Money for the project is included in the city’s 1996-97 budget.
