A Long Beach elementary school has received an academic award for its bilingual education program.
Patrick Henry Elementary was one of two schools in the state to earn a Seal of Academic Excellence this year from the California Assn. for Bilingual Education. The other school to receive the honor was Calexico’s Mains Elementary.
Association officials said the award is given only to programs showing evidence of students’ English language proficiency, as well as development in their primary language. Also, the programs must provide continuous bilingual instruction at every grade, and parents must help shape the curriculum.
