Donors Sought for Recreation Programs

The San Fernando Recreation and Community Service Department has started a fund-raising campaign to provide scholarships for children whose families are unable to pay for them to join recreational programs, city officials announced.
“We hope that every group and individual in town will pitch in to help provide for our community’s youth,” said Ed Montan, director of the Recreation and Community Service Department.
“It is important that every child have access to recreational opportunities as they are cornerstones of the growth process,” he added.
Under the scholarship program, youths 18 and younger will be able to participate for free in activities ranging from roller hockey and flag football to ballet folklorico and Disneyland excursions.
Income guidelines from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development will be used to determine eligibility, officials said.
Scholarships are available to San Fernando residents only.
The San Fernando Kiwanis Club kicked off the fund-raising campaign recently with a $500 donation from money raised at its annual pancake breakfast, Montan said.
“So far, we’ve raised over $3,000. We can help a lot of kids with that much money,” Montan said.
Those interested in donating to the program may call Montan at (818) 898-1290.
For applications, or to inquire into eligibility for scholarships, call or visit the department’s offices at 209 Park Ave.
