Plan to Raze Naval Station Is Focus of Hearing
- Share via
Forced by a court order, Port of Long Beach officials have set a date for a new public hearing on their plans to raze the city’s closed naval station and lease the property to a Chinese shipping company.
Although city officials held 15 public hearings on re-use of the land before it was leased to China Ocean Shipping Co., one of its fastest-growing tenants, a judge ruled last week that the port had rushed the process.
Port officials plan to build a 145-acre shipping terminal for the company, but the project has drawn criticism from environmentalists and historical preservationists.
The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 12 in the Long Beach Public Library, main branch downtown.
