Kay’s Goal Gives Royal New Crown
For the second time in three seasons, Simi Valley Royal edged Fountain Valley, 1-0, for the Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer title.
Brandon Kay scored in the 50th minute, knocking a deflected shot past Kendall Simmonds and into the lower left corner of the net. From there, Royal (26-5-1) held the fort, denying the Barons (20-6-3) at every turn and winning its 16th consecutive match.
There were plenty of standouts in the physical and fast-paced match. Goalkeeper Matt Rainer made five saves, including three that elicited roars from the Royal fans. His twin brother, Mike, a midfielder, aided Royal’s aerial dominance.
Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick 1, Sierra Madre Maranatha 0--John-Paul Glowacki scored in the 51st minute to give Chadwick (22-4-1) the win over Maranatha (19-5-4) in the boys’ Division V final at Gahr High.
Los Alamitos 3, Newhall Hart 1--Sommer Hammoud, Kristi Bissonnette, and Niki Szlak each scored to lead Los Alamitos (24-4-3) to its second consecutive Southern Section Division I championship at Gahr High.
Hart (24-2-2) got a goal from Laura Qualls, her 30th of the season.
