Pepperdine Surprises USC, 4-2

Pepperdine baseball Coach Frank Sanchez spent the previous 10 seasons as a USC assistant, but he insisted that the Waves’ 4-2 victory over the Trojans on Tuesday in Malibu was special only because his team played well against an opponent ranked No. 7 in the nation.
“We feel good about any win we get,” Sanchez said. “They are a good team, and to put together good pitching, defense and timely hitting, that feels good.”
Left-hander Randy Wolf picked up his first save by getting the last three outs after Jason Brown opened the ninth with a single.
USC scored one run in the first against Will Oman (1-1), who allowed only a home run by Jeremy Freitas thereafter.
Pepperdine scored two runs in the second when a double by Josh Oder and single by Mark Lopez was followed by a run-scoring single by Tyler Ferrer and a squeeze by Damon Katz. The Waves snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth by capitalizing on two errors.
Pepperdine (9-13), which lost three of four last weekend at Hawaii-Hilo, has won five home games in a row.
