In Reverse, Matadors Go Forward

Cesar Martinez drove in three runs but Cal State Northridge blew a late three-run lead and lost to Portland, 8-6, in the final game of pool play Wednesday in the Johnny Quik tournament at Fresno State.
Northridge (19-9-1) finished 2-1 in pool play and enters elimination play as the top-seeded team in the Blue Division.
Portland (6-4-1) scored two runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth before the game was called because of a tournament time limit.
Gary Stephenson (2-2), the Matadors’ third pitcher, gave up the three runs in the eighth on two hits and two walks.
Cal Poly (SLO) 6, Cal Lutheran 2--Run-scoring singles by Mike Young and Tom McGee in the ninth were not enough for the Kingsmen (14-5) at Cal Poly.
SOFTBALL
Antelope Valley 9, Desert 0--Sophomore right-hander Correna Berlinger struck out eight, allowing one hit and two walks in four innings for the Marauders (11-12-1) in a Foothill Conference game at College of the Desert.
Berlinger hit a two-run home run during a four-run third inning.
Kristal Nessa had a double, two runs batted in and two stolen bases, and Kristina Gonzales had a run-scoring double in the second.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 8, Purdue 1--The Waves swept six singles matches, including straight-set victories by Isabela Petrov, Zsofia Csapo, Karolina Borgersen and Annabel Rognon, in a nonconference match at Pepperdine.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pierce d. San Diego Mesa, 15-10, 15-12, 15-13--Claude Szenasi had 21 kills for the Brahmas (7-1, 7-1) in a South Coast Conference match.
