Gingrich: GOP’s Slates Should Be 50% Female

Reuters

Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday that he hopes women will account for half of his party’s candidates by the year 2000.

“Nothing is better for this party than to have half of our candidates female as early as possible in 1998 and 2000, as soon as we can get it,” Gingrich said in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

Fifty-two women were among the 435 members of the House of Representatives elected last November, 36 of them Democrats. The 100-member Senate has nine women, six of whom are Democrats.
