Two States Are Sued Over Female Inmate Abuse

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department sued Arizona and Michigan last week, alleging that female inmates at their state-run prisons have been subjected to unlawful invasions of privacy and sexual assaults by guards.
The lawsuits seek a court order requiring that the two states protect female inmates from rape, sexual assault or other improper sexual contact by prison staff and ensure that inmates and staff do not engage in sexual relations. The department said it would seek to ensure that female inmates’ privacy was well-protected.
