Four pipe bombs were found inside a van Thursday in Pomona after the driver crashed on the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
Three of the gunpowder-filled pipes had been detonated by late Thursday, said CHP Officer Shirley Gaines.
The devices--three plastic pipes and one metal--were discovered after the van crashed into the center divider about 4:15 p.m., she said.
The driver complained of pain and was taken to a hospital, leaving the CHP to tend to the damaged vehicle.
“During the process of inventory, the officer found what appeared to be pipe bombs inside,” Gaines said. The driver was contacted and told officers the pipes were filled with gunpowder.
The van was left on the Garey Avenue offramp, she said. The ramp was shut down and a Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called in.
