What Price Hollywood? (AMC Monday at 3:30 p.m.) Usually considered the unofficial first version of “A Star Is Born,” this excellent 1932 George Cukor-David Selznick inside-Hollywood picture contrasts the rise of a young star (Constance Bennett) with the fall of her brilliant, alcoholic mentor, played by real-life director-actor Lowell Sherman. Black and White in Color (Cinemax Wednesay at 11 p.m.) Jean-Jacques Annaud’s surprise winner of the 1977 best foreign film Oscar looks at the folly of war and of nationalism with an eye and an ear for comic irony reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene. It centers on a group of Frenchmen living in an African trading post who, in a burst of patriotism, conclude that they ought to attack a German fort with the outbreak of World War I.
