Not so fast: Alemany High boys’ volleyball...

Not so fast: Alemany High boys’ volleyball Coach Jamie Quaglino survived Monday night’s match against Glendale. But just barely.
The match lasted three hours and 15 minutes, but the longest minute came when Quaglino’s team, with a 14-13 lead, thought it had won the fifth game on a ball that was hit long by a Glendale player.
The Indians celebrated and ran off the court.
They were then called back because a line judge had called a touch at the net by an Alemany player.
“I had already thrown up my arms and put my board down and let a little air out,” Quaglino said after Alemany (3-4) finally won, 10-15, 17-19, 15-13, 15-6, 19-17.
Adding further drama to the match was the unexpected return of Alemany outside hitter Brett Bell, who entered in the third game despite a severely sprained ankle. He finished with 16 kills and 12 digs.
“He was the Kirk Gibson of our team,” Quaglino said. “Without Brett, I’d have to say we don’t win that match.”
Flying high: Eddie Simon of Notre Dame High cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault in the small schools’ division Saturday at the Long Beach Wilson Invitational. He has three victories in a row.
Court sense: Jeff Bordey knows his way around the volleyball court.
That makes sense. He’s played every position at St. Francis.
The 6-foot-1 junior plays middle blocker, opposite and outside hitter for the Knights and was their setter last year.
“He’s a sharp kid,” St. Francis Coach Mark Frazee said. “He’s always the last one out of the gym. He loves to hit. He loves to set. He’ll do anything.”
