Long Beach Rally Falls Short in 9th

Long Beach State rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and left the tying run at second in a 13-12 loss to host Pepperdine Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game.
Steve Doherty hit a two-run home run in the ninth with two outs to cut the score to 13-12 and Casey Martin followed with a pinch-hit double. But J.J. Newkirk struck out to end the game and Long Beach State’s nine-game winning streak.
Pepperdine (16-15) scored nine runs in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead, but Long Beach (17-12) tied it with seven in the fifth.
