Second-seeded Nino Gabriele of Birmingham defeated Bao Nguyen of Eagle Rock, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round of the City Section tennis tournament at MountainGate Country Club on Thursday.
Other first-round winners included Frank Vlahovic of Verdugo Hills, Sonny Werda of Kennedy, Reza Alizadeh of Birmingham, Manish Narayan and Bobby Narayan of El Camino Real and Farshad Hajimirazee of Taft.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Campbell Hall d. Milken, 15-1, 15-4, 15-2--Larry Cole had 13 kills for the Vikings (15-2) in a first-round Southern Section Division III playoff at Campbell Hall.
Westlake d. Beverly Hills, 15-3, 15-9, 11-15, 15-7--Scott Swaving had 20 kills in the Division II playoffs at Westlake (11-6).
HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING
Division I Preliminaries--Sophomore Jennifer Parmenter of L.A. Baptist recorded the fastest times in the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
Seniors Eric Shafer of Thousand Oaks and Noah Cirincione of Agoura qualified for finals in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
