Homeplace Shopping Center Under Study

The City Council on Monday will consider a proposal to build a shopping center near 17th Street and Tustin Avenue.
“It’s a really good thing for the city that people want to develop here,” Councilman Ted R. Moreno said.
The fact that another shopping center, approved by the council in December, is already under construction just a short distance away on 17th Street is particularly heartening, Moreno said, because both sites had been vacant for years.
The Centre on 17th, already being built, will house a Lucky supermarket and should be open this summer.
The project that the council will consider Monday, Homeplace Shopping Center, would have an Orchard Supply Hardware store and several smaller retail locations on a 9.5-acre lot. The center will be designed to hold several smaller retail stores as well as a drive-through restaurant.
In its report to the council, the city staff said the center would provide a much-needed hardware store. No other exists within five miles of the proposed project, the report said.
City officials said they expect little public opposition. To date, nobody has contacted City Hall objecting to the proposed center, officials said. Two houses now sit on the property, but both have been vacant for several years and will be relocated.
The council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 22 Civic Center Plaza. Information: (714) 647-5400.
