NEWS FLASH : Busy Eberhart Resigns Softball Coaching Post

Less than a week after his team’s loss in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs, Crescenta Valley High softball Coach Alan Eberhart has resigned.

“Just feel like it’s increasingly difficult to be the football coach, the softball coach and the dad,” said Eberhart, 40, who has three young children. “I’ve been doing everything part time. The [softball team needs] somebody there for them full time.”

Eberhart, coach of the Falcon football team, is 64-18 in three seasons as softball coach. Crescenta Valley finished 20-7 this season after losing to Simi Valley, 2-1, on Friday.

The Falcons faltered in the final weeks, losing three of their last four games and being overtaken by Hoover for the Pacific League title.

“[Over the weekend] I kept thinking we should be able to do more than we did,” Eberhart said. “I want these girls to have the opportunity.”

Elite nomination: Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman has been nominated by Seattle Seahawk running back Steve Broussard for the NFL’s High School Football Coach of the Year Award.

The award, initiated in 1995, is designed to honor coaches who have profoundly affected the athletic and personal development of an NFL player.

Broussard played running back and linebacker for Engilman at Manual Arts from 1982-84. Manual Arts won City 3-A titles in 1983 and ’84.

One high school coach will be honored in each month of the regular season (September through December). A final award-winning coach will be announced near the end of the NFL season and will be invited to attend the Super Bowl.

Good start for Gore: Former Hart High standout Jason Gore of Pepperdine shot a six-under-par 65 Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., giving him a two-stroke lead over three others.

The Waves are in sixth place with a three-over-par 287. Host Northwestern leads at 282.

Best in West: Cal State Northridge shortstop Adam Kennedy was one of several area players selected to the Division I All-West Region team by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

UCLA pitcher Jim Parque (Crescenta Valley High) and Nevada third baseman Andy Dominique (Alemany) also were chosen. Northridge right fielder Jose Miranda, Pepperdine pitcher Randy Wolf (El Camino Real), Fresno State pitcher Jeff Weaver (Simi Valley) and Stanford catcher Jon Schaeffer (Harvard-Westlake) were second-team selections.

More honors: Catcher Tom McGee and left-handed pitcher Richard Bell of Cal Lutheran were selected to the NCAA Division III All-American team by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

McGee, who batted .404 with 14 home runs, was a second-team choice, and Bell, who was 9-1 with a 1.89 earned-run average, was a third-team choice.
