GRANADA HILLS — A fire of suspicious origin caused more than $1 million in damage in a shopping center Monday night, gutting a cleaners shop and a medical supplies store, authorities said.
No one was hurt in the fire, although oxygen canisters from the medical supply business exploded, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the city of Los Angeles Fire Department.
The fire started about 9 p.m. in the center in the 10100 block of Balboa Boulevard, authorities said. It took 90 firefighters about 90 minutes to extinguish the flames.
Damage was estimated at $700,000 to Valley Home Medical Supply and $440,000 to the 1st Class Cleaners and Laundry next-door, Humphrey said. Most of the damage was structural.
It was not known in which business the fire started.
It will take days to track down the origin of the flames because the roofs collapsed, falling onto any evidence below, authorities said. However, the cause of the fire was tentatively listed as “suspicious.”
Two other businesses in the center--Demian’s Coin Laundry and a Sinclair Paint store--sustained minor damage, Humphrey said.
