LA HABRA — A 6-year-old boy playing with a lighter in a closet started a fire at an apartment complex Sunday that landed him and his mother in the hospital and displaced three other families.
The fire started at about 5:30 p.m. in an upstairs unit of the Viking Garden Apartments at 951 E. Greenwood Ave., said Bob Lee, a spokesman for the La Habra Fire Department, after flames from the lighter spread to the clothes hanging in the closet, then to a bedroom.
Four fire engines were able to put the fire out in about 20 minutes, Lee said. The boy and his mother were taken to Friendly Hills Regional Medical Center in La Habra where they were being treated for minor smoke inhalation Sunday night. In addition, three other families had to leave nearby apartments because of about $45,000 in water and structural damage.
Names of the families involved were not available, Lee said.
