Baptists’ Boycott

* Re “Southern Baptist Delegates OK Disney Boycott,” June 19:

If the Southern Baptists really want to go “up to the level of God,” then just boycotting Disney isn’t good enough. They need to boycott every business with gay and lesbian health plans, stop seeing all movies written and/or directed by or starring a gay or lesbian person, discontinue wearing any article of clothing designed by someone who is gay or lesbian, not shop in any store that employs someone who is gay or lesbian, not see any sporting event with a gay or lesbian athlete, and Southern Baptist women must immediately stop getting their hair done by gay hairdressers. That’ll show the rest of us.

* So the Southern Baptists have decided to boycott Disney. Not just the corporate pieces they’re unhappy with, but all of it. Of course, Disney also produces plenty of entertainment that even Baptists could agree is kid- and family-friendly. They’re just asking for trouble for their denomination.

Many Catholics ignore the pope’s pronouncements on sexual matters. Others, taking dogma more seriously, leave the church altogether.

I suspect the end result of the Southern Baptists’ declared boycott may be the same: members ignoring the church leadership, or deciding to leave.

* “Heigh-Ho,” you Goofy, Grumpy Southern Baptists, you! In your “Topsy Turvy” logic, you’ve voted to boycott ol’ Cruella de Disney because the “Supercalifragilistic-expialidocious” studio recognizes gay domestic partners as a nontraditional “Family,” and therefore eligible for “The Bare Necessities” in benefits; and because the parks host a day of “Together Time” for “festive folk”; and because Ellen DeGeneres is “Out There” on TV and proud of it. “Be Our Guest,” says the entertainment giant, as it couldn’t give a “Higitus Figitus.” “Hakuna Matata” is Disney’s motto, for as proven time and time again, these Dopey, Mickey Mouse boycotts don’t mean “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.” Talk about your Silly Sympathies!
