City Weighs Legal Action to Halt State Sale of Homes
- Share via
The City Council is considering legal action against Caltrans to stop the sale of surplus state-owned houses that were once in the path of a proposed freeway.
The council in closed session Wednesday will discuss whether to try to stop the sale of 10 Caltrans homes in South Pasadena to Pasadena Neighborhood Housing Services and Esperanza Charities, a nonprofit housing agency that rents homes to low-income families. The council also wants to halt future sales of other state-owned homes in the same neighborhood to such charities, city officials said.
Beatrice Siev, chairwoman of the city’s Transportation Commission, said rental of the houses, which are clustered in one neighborhood, will depress real estate prices.
The California Transportation Commission on June 6 approved the sale of the 10 South Pasadena houses--and one in Pasadena--because of changes in the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension. The $663,000 sale is in escrow.
