Molotov Cocktail Thrown at Macy’s in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — Holiday shoppers fled in a panic Sunday when a man walked into Macy’s department store on Union Square, smashed a display case and threw a Molotov cocktail that started a small fire, police said.
No one was hurt in the attack shortly after 4:10 p.m., but shoppers were evacuated from the first floor of the busy department store, officials said.
Police arrested Devon Andrede, 36, of Los Angeles in connection with the attack. He also is suspected of shoplifting, officials said.
Before the attack, security guards said, they saw Andrede shoplifting in the store and alerted police. Guards then saw the man take out a piece of paper, set it on fire, pour some kind of flammable liquid on it and throw it at some curtains, officials said.
The bomb ignited the curtain and filled much of the first floor with smoke, a fire spokesman said. A security guard tackled the man moments later, he said, and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Shoppers were guided to another entrance while Macy’s crews cleaned up the debris.
