Coliseum Bound: For the third time in four years, a Valley high school will be playing for the crown jewel of City Section football. Taft hosts Sylmar on Friday, with the winner meeting either Westchester or San Pedro for the 4-A Division championship Dec. 12 at the Coliseum.
Stingy Spartans: Sylmar (11-1) has used a tough defense, two quarterbacks and a balanced rushing attack that includes Angel Guerrero (No. 30, above) to win nine in a row. Four victories, including the Spartans’ quarterfinal win over Franklin, have been by shutout.
Trying Again: Taft (11-0) is shooting for its second consecutive appearance in the 4-A final. The Toreadors suffered a heartbreaking 22-20 loss to San Pedro last season. Like Sylmar, Taft features an outstanding defense, allowing fewer than 21 points a game.
Opening Event: El Camino Real and Chatsworth, both hoping to take the City 3-A championship, will play in semifinal games Friday.
