Orange Coast Marking Its 50th Anniversary
- Share via
It was 50 years ago in January that the federal government donated land from the deactivated Santa Ana Army Air Base to establish Orange Coast College.
The college officially had been established by an election in 1947, and classes began in September of 1948. The campus already is celebrating its anniversary, with a new logo of a crashing wave and revamped school colors.
The base could house 50,000 Army cadets at any given time, so it was perfect for a college campus, officials said.
Plans to build the campus somewhere in the area, however, were started before the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
After World War II, the Army base was “sold” to the community. The price was right--$1.
