Waves’ Wolf Signs With the Phillies

Left-hander Randy Wolf, the Philadelphia Phillies’ second-round draft pick from Pepperdine, was signed and assigned to Batavia of the New York-Penn League. Terms were not disclosed.
Wolf, 20, the West Coast Conference’s pitcher of the year this season, posted a 9-4 record and conference-best 1.79 earned-run average at Pepperdine.
In three seasons with the Waves, Wolf had a 25-8 record, a 1.97 ERA and a school-record 328 strikeouts.

Pittsburgh Pirate reliever John Ericks, who hasn’t pitched since late April because of herniated disks in his neck, may not begin a rehabilitation assignment at rookie league Bradenton until Thursday.

Gary Sheffield, who came out of a game Sunday after pulling up lame, did not play for the Florida Marlins on Monday against the Montreal Expos.
