A Hawthorne man shot and killed his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend then critically wounded himself in the chest at a Redondo Beach residence, police said Thursday.
The shootings occurred Wednesday night in the 2600 block of Voorhees Avenue. The names of the dead were withheld pending notification of relatives.
Police responded to a 911 call made by the wounded 20-year-old woman, who later died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. In the home, authorities found the woman, her dead 31-year-old boyfriend, and the wounded suspect, 22-year-old Mario Antonio Guevara Barrera, said Capt. Jeff Cameron.
Barrera remains in critical condition at Harbor-UCLA.
The suspect allegedly ran out of ammunition after shooting the victims several times and went to his car and retrieved more while the woman called 911, Cameron said. He added that Barrera allegedly returned and shot the woman again while she was on the phone with the 911 operator and then shot himself. The operator reported that she could hear the gunfire.
Cameron said investigators believe Barrera and the woman had recently broken up and the woman had started dating the 31-year-old man who was found dead at the scene. He said it is still unclear who lived at the residence where the shooting occurred.
