A footnote to Christopher Reynolds excellent piece on Portugal, “Portrait of Porto” (Sept. 28):
A train departs Porto’s Campanha station several times a day for Regua to begin a slow passage east following the Douro River. The two-hour ride, a splendid tour for $10, is a visual feast of whites, greens and yellows on the terraced vineyards and olive trees that cling to steep hillsides.
Upon arrival at Regua, one can take a five-mile bus ride to ancient Lamego, the site of Portuguese independence and home of Sandeman wines, or a train ride north to Vila Real some 20 miles to see the Mateus Baroque palace.
There is a daily boat tour up the Douro all the way to Barca de Alva for $100.
