Flames Ride a Hat Trick to Deadlock

Cory Stillman’s first career hat trick helped Calgary stop Detroit’s four-game winning streak as the Flames and Red Wings tied, 4-4, Sunday night at Detroit.

Stillman scored his third goal of the game with 54 seconds left in regulation, forcing the tie after the Red Wings took a 4-3 lead with three consecutive goals earlier in the period.

The tie was the first blemish on the Red Wing season after the defending Stanley Cup champions opened with four victories.

Vyacheslav Kozlov scored two goals and Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman added one apiece for Detroit, which also got two assists from Nicklas Lidstrom.

Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood, who had given up only four goals in the Red Wings’ first four games, stopped 24 shots. Calgary’s Rick Tabaracci made 33 saves.

NHL Notes

Ottawa center-right wing Daniel Alfredsson ended his holdout, agreeing to a long-term contract with the Senators, the team announced. Terms were not disclosed, but General Manager Pierre Gauthier indicated the two sides reached an agreement on a contract that would not have been possible several months earlier.
