Private Firm to Run City’s Data Processing

A private firm will be hired to take over the city’s computer data processing services, despite objections from city employees.
The City Council this week approved a five-year, $20.6-million contract with Systems and Computer Technology Corp., based in Malvern, Pa., which has an Irvine office. Councilman Lou Lopez voted against the plan.
City officials say the contract will save the city about $267,500 a year. The private company has agreed to hire 24 full-time city employees affected by the move, and must keep them for at least six months. Four part-time employees and eight independent contractors also would be hired.
Nick Berardino, who represents Anaheim Municipal Employees Assn., called the contract a “big mistake.” Many of the affected employees want to remain with the city, he said.
City Manager James D. Ruth said officials will “do everything we can to find other positions in the city structure” for employees who wish to remain.
