Job Opportunities in Entertainment

Re “Movies as a Job Engine,” editorial, Jan. 25: Two million dollars in state funding was allocated to the Hollywood Entertainment Museum for its education center and further development of programs targeting schools. The education center makes up one-third of the museum, providing rooms for industry-specific studies, an electronic library with a state-of-the-art career job bank, editing and Foley rooms.
For the first time, the entertainment industry is collaborating to provide information to the museum’s job bank. Partnerships have been established with the Annenberg Los Angeles Metropolitan Project, LAUSD, UCLA, the American Film Institute and Santa Monica City College, etc. Curriculum is being developed for spring classroom introduction. A distance learning program for area detention center youth is in development with the Los Angeles County Office of Education. A museum internship program for at-risk high school students has produced talented individuals now employed by the entertainment industry.
As a region, we need to introduce studies into the elementary to high school levels to encourage future industry career development. That is exactly what the museum is doing, serving as a resource to all with an interest in learning about Hollywood’s past and investigating career opportunities of the future.
