Flood-Ravaged City Hopes Parade Offers Ray of Sun

Organizers of the 32nd annual Patriots Day Parade, scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, said they hope it rejuvenates the storm-ravaged city.
“We need something upbeat around here,” Sandi Werthe, the parade committee’s treasurer, said. Last week’s mudslide destroyed two houses and severely damaged 18 others, among them the home of the committee’s president, Charles Quilter.
More than 100 parade entries, including Elvis impersonators, the Chocolate Lovers of America and a beach chair drill team from south Laguna Beach, will march in honor of patriotism and, belatedly, the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Werthe said.
The parade begins at Laguna Beach High School and will wind through downtown, ending at City Hall two hours later. Downtown streets, excluding Coast Highway, will be closed during the parade. Information: (714) 497-1018, Ext. 5.
