City to Pick Motto, Flower and Animal
Looking to develop a sense of identity as the community celebrates a decade of incorporation, the City Council on Monday will adopt a city motto, flower and animal.
The proposed city motto will be familiar to most residents: “Mission Viejo--The California Promise.” The slogan was used by the Mission Viejo Co. as it began marketing homes in the planned community.
“It has historical value to it,” Mayor Susan Withrow said. “I can remember seeing signs off the freeway north of us advertising Mission Viejo as ‘the California Promise.’ It’s clearly an identifying phrase for Mission Viejo.”
The choices for city flower will be the marguerite daisy, the rose and the wild mustard flower. Council members will consider the hummingbird, red tail hawk and coyote in picking a city animal.
The selections were the result of a city contest in which elementary school children sent in a brief essay touting their choices.
The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 25909 Pala. Information: (714) 470-3000.
