Economic Steward Zhu Elected Premier

The National People’s Congress elected Zhu Rongji, a vice premier who has steered China’s economic policy for five years, as premier. Zhu, who ran unopposed and was the candidate of the Communist Party, was elected with 2,890 votes; there were 60 votes against him or abstentions. He replaces Li Peng, who was obliged to step down after serving the constitutional limit of two five-year terms. Li has been named to head the legislature.
